Using a Repository of OERs as the Vehicle for Curriculum Renewal

Lucy Alexander, University of the Western Cape, South Africa

Conference Theme:
Innovation

Summary:
Attempts to build an open repository of Public Health teaching cases for curriculum enhancement.

Abstract:
A repository of Public Health cases has been developed by the School of Public Health, University of the Western Cape and lodged on the bibliographic referencing system, Mendeley as a resource to enhance our teaching. Intended as teaching cases for a Masters in Public Health, some cases have already been integrated into teaching courses, and are intended for use in problem-based learning online, as well as face to face workshop discussions. The cases have been sourced from the internet and from the School of Public Health’s own research and service work.
The repository is presented as a Mendeley Group and is therefore also open to additions and exchange from users as well as for discussions on what makes an effective Public Health case. This presentation captures efforts to stimulate exposure and usage of the repository, and documents how openness has facilitated the growth of an easily accessible resource for Public Health educators to use, re-purpose, and for engagement around teaching through cases in Public Health education.
