Using Creative Commons Licenses for Education

Joscelyn
Joscelyn Upendran, Public Project Lead (Creative Commons England & Wales)
Joscelyn is a qualified solicitor with experience and interest in commercial law. Following her time in the legal profession Joscelyn moved into the academic field where she lectured at undergraduate and postgraduate level on training programmes for trainee lawyers, accountants and managers who were undertaking professional management and legal qualifications. During her time in education Joscelyn also worked with business clients to develop and deliver bespoke training programmes and managed and delivered distance learning programmes. This interest and experience seeded the thinking behind lovle, the company she co-founded, which specialises in providing eLearning and eBusiness solutions. Joscelyn's interest in legal reuse and sharing led to her becoming involved in Creative Commons UK which involves liaising with the public, speaking at events, delivering workshops about Creative Commons licences and how they may be used by different types of users whether individuals, commercial entities, or not-for-profit and public sector organisations.

Conference Theme: Impact

Summary: A session to explore and demonstrate how to use Creative Commons Licences for maximum benefit and impact.

Audience: Anyone interested in open content, copyright and OER and in the most effective use of Creative Commons (CC) licences: Academics, management and support staff of Higher Education Institutions, members of staff from institutions that are currently or expect to be involved in OER.

Outcomes: Participants will be able to:

Abstract: The session will initially provide a brief refresher to CC licences before going onto explore and discuss the best way to use them to benefit from maximum impact. There are too many instances where incorrect or incomplete marking up and attribution of the resources mean that the resource may not be as easily discoverable by search engines and provenance may be lost. The session will go over and discuss best practice of marking up and attributing correctly and look at examples of users around the globe. The session will also raise questions for discussions around the advantages and areas of concerns in using the CC licences and in having jurisdiction specific licences as opposed to a single suite of international licences.
